Cats are famously self-sufficient groomers, but that doesn't mean they don't need your help. Regular grooming at home improves your cat's coat health, reduces hairballs, catches skin issues early, and — most importantly — deepens the bond between you and your feline. Here's everything Australian cat owners need to know.
Why Home Grooming Matters
Even the most fastidious cat can't reach every part of their body properly. Matted fur, overgrown nails, ear wax buildup, and dental plaque are all issues that can develop quietly and cause pain or infection if not addressed. Home grooming helps you stay on top of these before they become vet visits.
It's also a sensory check — every time you groom your cat, you're running your hands across their body. You'll notice lumps, tender spots, fleas, or skin irritation far earlier than you would otherwise.
Grooming Frequency by Coat Type
Short-Haired Cats
Short-haired breeds like Australian moggies, Burmese, and Siamese need grooming once a week. A rubber grooming mitt or fine-toothed metal comb is usually enough to remove dead hair and distribute skin oils.
Medium-Haired Cats
Breeds like the British Shorthair and Ragdoll benefit from brushing 2–3 times per week, especially around the neck, belly, and behind the ears where mats tend to form first.
Long-Haired Cats
Persians, Maine Coons, and Norwegian Forest Cats need daily grooming. Their coats mat quickly, especially in humid Australian summers. If you adopt a long-haired cat, daily grooming should become part of your routine from day one.
Essential Grooming Tools for Australian Cat Owners
Slicker Brush
A slicker brush with fine wire bristles removes loose fur and detangles gently. It works on all coat lengths and most cats tolerate it well once they get used to the sensation.
Deshedding Tool
A deshedding comb or blade reaches the undercoat and removes the loose hair before it ends up on your couch, clothes, and in your cat's stomach as a hairball. Particularly useful during spring and autumn when Australian cats shed more heavily.
Nail Clippers
Cat nails should be trimmed every 2–4 weeks. Use a dedicated cat nail clipper rather than human nail scissors — the angle and blade are designed to prevent splitting. Clip just the clear tip, well above the pink quick inside the nail.
Ear Cleaning Solution
A cotton ball with a vet-approved ear cleaning solution, used gently on the outer ear, keeps wax and debris from building up. Never insert anything into the ear canal.
Cat Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Dental disease affects around 70% of cats over three years old. A finger brush or cat-specific toothbrush used a few times a week — with cat-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste) — makes a significant difference to long-term health.
How to Groom a Cat That Doesn't Like Being Handled
Patience and positive association are everything. Start by simply touching your cat in the areas you'll need to groom — paws, ears, face — without any tools, and rewarding them with a treat. Introduce tools one at a time. Keep sessions short (2–5 minutes) and always end on a positive note. Over weeks, most cats come to accept, and even enjoy, grooming sessions.
If your cat is extremely resistant, particularly to nail trimming, a grooming bag (a zippered mesh bag your cat slips into) can make the process much safer for both of you.
Do Cats Need Baths?
Most short and medium-haired cats don't need baths unless they've gotten into something. If you do need to bathe your cat, use a cat-specific shampoo, warm water, and be thorough about rinsing — residue irritates their skin. Dry them thoroughly in a warm room away from draughts, especially important in cooler parts of Australia like Tasmania and the Victorian highlands.
Seasonal Grooming in Australia
Australia's climate varies enormously by state. In warmer states (QLD, NT, WA), cats may shed lightly year-round rather than in clear seasonal bursts. In the southern states with more distinct seasons, expect heavy shedding in spring and again in autumn. Ramp up your grooming frequency during these periods.
